It was March of 1982.
I was living on the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii. Living the dream. Surfing everyday.
But I have to tell you how I got there first before I share…
The Best Advice I Ever Received that changed my life forever.
Before we move on here, I’d like you to think about that question.
- What was it?
- How did it change your life?
- How did it alter your course in life?
- How did that advice enable you to impact the lives of others?
In the third week of my senior year in High School in 1981 I had gone surfing before
school. In my habitual way as usual was late about 30 minutes to class. Strolling down the open hallway, I was confronted by a Teacher.
“Hey Alan,” said the Teacher. “Why don’t you do the School a favor and do yourself a favor and just drop out?”
Did he really just ask me that!?
But it actually made a lot of sense to me. I didn’t have enough units to graduate anyway.
My young life was pretty messed up. Smoking pot three to four times a day.
Getting drunk every night. And to top it off, cocaine had become a daily habit.
Needless to say I was not a “happy camper” on the inside.
I was actually pretty miserable and wanted out.
My parents bribed me. They asked me if I would go to this organization called
Youth With A Mission for six months.
My answer, “No Way!”
Their response, “It’s in Hawaii.”
My reply, “When can I leave?!”
So on December 28th, 1981 I took off for Hawaii. A buddy of mine had moved there the previous year and I ended up staying with him and two other guys living three houses in from Rocky Point on the North Shore.
But I wasn’t suppose to actually be there. I was suppose to be on the Big Island. That’s where the six month program was that they intended me to go to. I did for one week and then I bailed.
Three months later I met this guy by the name of Tom Bauer. He was on staff at the time of Youth With A Mission.
Now the founder of Surfing The Nations.
The Best Advice I Ever Received from Tom was in the form of a question:
Are you willing to be made willing?
That question haunted me for a couple of weeks. I finally called and told him that I was.
I was willing to be made willing. Little did I realize my life would be changed forever. And because of it we have been able to impact thousands of people around the world with God’s marvelous Grace!
So, have you thought about that question?
What’s the Best Advice You’ve Ever Received?
How did it change your life, alter your course in life?
How has it enabled you to impact the lives of other?
I’d love to hear about it!
